West Coast

Old mining towns and rich convict heritage populate one of Australia’s last wilderness frontiers on Tasmania’s west coast.

Rugged mountainous rainforests and rivers are easily accessible from the infamous penal settlement of Strahan, now an oasis on the untouched Macquarie Harbour. Short walks from the winding roadside, a West Coast Wilderness Railway journey, extended forest adventures or a Gordon River cruise are only a few of many ways to soak in the regions natural beauty. There are some man-made sights worth seeing too at the controversial Lake Pedder dam or once the worlds richest gold and copper mining town of Queenstown.

The marquee attraction here are the spectacular lakes, gorges, waterfalls and caves of Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair National Park. Once covered in glaciers it is now one of the only temperate rainforests left on earth. Take a multi-day trek or boat, bike, canoe and fish your way around. There are endless things to do on the Tasmanian west coast for all tastes.
